Nipper Update, 20 October 2013

Posted by Elyse Robert on Monday, 21 October 2013

Hi there

The start of probably a weekly email from me to keep you up to date on Nipper News at the club.

The most important thing first up is that it is our Centenary Celebrations this weekend, Labour Weekend.  We are having a club day on Sunday 27th  October  which will involve our Senior and older members taking part in a mini-carnival/comp starting at 1 pm  at the club.  We also hope to have a traditional march past and rescue (with the old line and reel) taking place, that should be fun to watch with Nippers able to take part in a fun mini-carnival from about 2 pm on the beach.  Don't worry if it's cold and horrible there won't be a whole lot of water activities, just mainly beach stuff! Nippers please wear your Beanies!!!

Everyone is then invited to attend a club BBQ, the charge of which will be a gold coin (or more) donation.  In order to sort out our catering we do need an indication as to whether you will be attending on the Sunday, please respond to communications@paekakarikisurflifeguards.org.nz to confirm your attendance. We will also have a full club photo and official cake cutting as part of the afternoon, it will be great for our Nippers to be involved in this so please do try to come to the club that day.

Car parking will be at a premium but you can park in QEII park behind the club and walk through to the club, that's definitely the easiest way to go!

While some of us would like a big holiday after the Centenary we can't as its then the start of the Surf Season which is always very exciting, the dates/info at the bottom of this email are important. Please also read the following on club gear.

Club Gear for Sale:

We will have some club gear for sale, this is outlined on our website.  Orders have closed for delivery for Centenary Weekend, we may have some stock remaining for our Registration Day but we will also take orders then for delivery in approx. 1-2 weeks after. Togs are currently being sorted.

The only thing compulsory is our yellow and black beanie ($20) and when competing in a carnival a bright fluorescent vest. ($14).  Both these items are basically at cost prices plus GST plus a small rounding amount.

The wearing of a vest is now compulsory at every competition for everyone (including Nippers).  This is a safety initiative and we will also encourage everyone to wear these bright vests when at training or playing in the sea at any time.  Despite ordering these vests some time ago to be here for our opening day we have been informed these have been delayed in shipping so it is unlikely they will be here for sale at opening day. The vests we have ordered are bright pink as it has been established that this is the brightest/best colour to see people when in the sea and therefore the safest to wear.  Kids who already have vests from Oceans competition etc can wear these and we do encourage kids to wear them as often as possible.  Vests are a tight fitting piece of clothing, we have tried to order small sizes,  kids may complain about tight fitting garments but that's just the way it is with these.  J

Important Dates/Previous Info:

Our first Nippers Surf session will take place on November 3rd November (first Sunday after Labour Weekend).  This will also be a registration day and your chance to pay subs and purchase or order uniform for the season. (more details on available clothing will come soon). Subs for the year are the same as last, that's $50 per Nipper but $30 for each subsequent Nipper in the same family, we also have a family membership of $100 (for parents and all kids under 22 yrs. in the same family).

First pool session at the awesome new Coastlands Aquatic Centre is Thursday 7th November, 7 pm. This will be a chance to sit your 200m badge which should be renewed each year, for those is swim squads who can't make the Thursday night we may be able to get a session sorted at Tawa Pool (we have to twist Hugh's arm for that and possibly Treasurer of the Swim Club)

We have had some volunteers for helpers this year but always welcome more, please let us know if you can help either on the beach, the pool or in the clubrooms this season.

Extra Board Training:

We have also started some extra Board training for Nippers aged 10 years and over on Tuesdays.

This will take place at the Pauatahanui Inlet on Tuesday evenings at 5:30. We meet in the car park on Mana Esplanade by Paremata Bridge (the car park on the other side of the road from Burger Wisconsin).

The aim of this is to give our Nippers a chance to do some paddling in flat water, we have found this is a great way to teach them correct technique.  Only Nippers 10 years and above and who have a 200m badge may attend.  (if new and not sure re 200 m badge please contact us to ascertain if suitable for your child).  As with all surf activities this is not compulsory but just a chance to help Nippers as they transition onto our Fibreglass boards.

If you are likely to attend please text Lynnie on 021 828 666.  Kids need to wear warm clothing, wetsuits and polyprops under wetsuits are best, wetsuit booties are also great. Parents, we need help with unpacking the trailer and sorting boards on arrival.  (and packing it all back up again!)

Special thanks to Lynnie, James and Rado who will make sure boards are packed on the trailer and that the trailer gets there!

Any queries please do not hesitate to contact either me or Lynnie jamesandlyn18@xtra.co.nz

Cheers

Sandra
