Nipper Update, 25 November 2013

Posted by Elyse Robert on Monday, 25 November 2013

Hi there

Well what a great day on the beach yesterday!  For some of us it was the second day in a row at Surf Carnivals and I'm very happy to report I have no sunburn. Hope everyone else was so lucky/clever J  I'm sure some of the kids shoulders will be a bit red. Sorry I got some kids ages wrong, if that was you can you please flick me a reply so I can rectify, ta.

Thanks to everyone who helped with tent going up and down, boards being packed and unpacked and all the team management roles.

It was great seeing all the kids competing and getting involved and really fantastic to see new kids taking part in events they hadn't done before especially the swim, boards and diamond races.  For the older kids it was awesome finishing off with board relays and getting so many involved.  Thanks to those who hung around for the those, whilst a pain they are scheduled at the end of the day competing in a team event is always a highlight and the kids did so well.

Special thanks as always to James for his trailer transporting and Lynnie for running the Junior programme.  We are always lucky to have Paekakariki officials on the beach so more thanks to Teri, Nat, Yolande and Ron for their efforts to ensure we could have the carnival.  Please try and get your kids to say thanks to the officials, especially at the end of the day.

When competing kids get points for top 5 places, these points carry forward from each carnival to determine the overall winners in the region for each gender/age.  Points also add up for the top club for the year.  We have 5 carnivals during the year but only points from 4 of the carnivals count, so you can miss one carnival if you wish for the season without it impacting on the points for the season.

The rash vests didn't turn out to be too much of an issue on Sunday (yay) but I'm very happy to report our ones arrived today.  We will get them printed with our Paekakariki logo and they will be available for sale on Sunday. After our printing costs the vest will be $20 each.  It will be compulsory for everyone at future  carnivals to wear them plus we want our kids on a Sunday to also be safe, be seen and wear them as well.  These are an important safety feature which everyone at every surf event in Australasia must now wear.

A note about vests, we have ordered size 8 and size 10 vests. (kids sizes).  These are meant to be a snug and tight fit so as not to be an impediment to any kids when in the water, especially when swimming.  Whilst the rash vest look small the stretch nicely and my 15 and 18 year olds both fit the size 10 kids vest and would use them to compete in, the tighter the better for our Seniors J  so kids may find the vests a bit tight at first, they will however get used to the fit and I don't think they will be too small for any of our Nippers.  Please explain this to your kids when getting their vests.

We also have for sale Paekakariki towels ($25) which we think will make great Christmas pressies, also peak caps for $18 and our swim caps, $10.  You can buy these on Sunday when our "shop" is opening during nippers.

Don't forget we have board training on Tuesday at Paremata Bridge, swimming at the pool on Thursday and we are back at Paekakarikion Sunday, 1:45 pm.

Regards
