CDO Update, Capital Coast - 4 March 2013

Posted by Elyse Robert on Monday, 4 March 2013

Hello Clubs

Just a few quick and timely reminders.

Please pass on to your members and as always let me know if there are any questions.

I will be on leave Thursday and Friday attending the State SLSNZ National Champs!

I'm there in a volunteer capacity, supporting the mighty Titahi Bay SLSC, but look forward to seeing some (most) of you there and hearing how your clubs are going.

Good luck to everyone coaching, competing and supporting!

See you on the beach

Zoë

Shark Sighting Policy and Procedures

With the fatal attack at Muriwai last week, it may be possible that people visiting the beaches may be more on the lookout for sharks. There may be some mistaken sightings and some actual sightings, and the attached policy should be enforced regardless. Please forward to your patrol captains. This is currently available on the SLSNZ website and in section C of every clubs Patrol Operations Manual.

What I would like to add is that sightings should be attempted to be confirmed by sight from land. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SEND ANY VESSEL TO INVESTIGATE OR DRIVE THE SHARK AWAY. In the best case scenario the shark is scared out of the area, but more than likely it will simply force the animal to dive deeper (and hence not be visible anymore) and worst case scenario it frustrates or antagonizes the shark and this results in a negative interaction between the vessel (person on vessel) and the shark. It is recommended that the animal's movements are simply monitored.
