A strong showing from its juniors boosted Paekakariki into
second place at last week's Capital Coast Surf Lifesaving
Championships.
The hosts of the two-day event finished second overall in both
the junior (7-13 years) and senior events, ending up runners-up to
Lyall Bay in the Whitehorse Trophy.
Lyall Bay dominated the senior competition overall with 111
points to Paekakariki's 58, with Worser Bay third on 27.
But Paekakariki pipped Lyall Bay by four points in the junior
competition, with 229, though well short of Maranui's 314.
Under-14 competitor Katie Trott won the board, diamond and swim
events in her grade, as well as the open women's swim.
With Josie Dixon claiming the under-14 flags and sprints, the
club had a clean sweep in the girls' under-14 grade.
Finn O'Neill also won the under-14 boys' swim, while Nic Cecioni
won the under-13 boys' swim.
In the senior events, Temuera Forbes dominated on the beach,
winning both the beach flags and beach sprints events, in both the
under-19 and open grades.
Hannah de Ridder won the open women's beach flags.
Paekakariki also won the open and under-19 men's taplin relays,
and were second in the under-16 women's event.
Jake Allen claimed third place in the feature open men's ironman
event.
Lyall Bay won the Whitehorse Trophy with 541 points, 167 clear
of Paekakariki, with Titahi Bay and Worser Bay third equal on 70
points.
