CDO Update, Capital Coast - 25 February 2013

Posted by Elyse Robert on Monday, 25 February 2013

Hi Clubs and clubbies

Time is flying, and we're almost through February…

There's been a lot of action around the area, but there's still a month or so to go in our 'official' season, so let's keep the awesome work up!

So far this season Capital Coast Clubs have completed:

  • ·         13,214 Patrol Hours
  • ·         127 Rescues
  • ·         198 First Aids
  • ·         25 Searches
  • ·         5,532 Preventative Actions involving 12,228 people

The statistics help us see the amazing job you are doing and tell your stories to our communities. Be sure to get the paper work added to PAM as soon as you can. The more accurate the data, the better the story we can tell.

And speaking of stories, how great is this… Another Capital Coast won the Central Region Rescue of the Month (that's two months in a row, woohoo)!

A huge congratulations to Palmerston North SLSC for their incredible efforts on Wellington Anniversary Weekend.

Read all about it by clicking here. You'll also find the information for nominating your club for a ROM award.

Congratulations also to Maranui SLSC who submitted a nomination. Their rescue wasn't given an official award, but keep an eye on "Coastwatch" on TVOne. The guards make an appearance as they assist with a very difficult patient, who against all recommendations, continued to swim at Oriental Parade, Wellington to the point of near drowning.

How else can I recognise the great work young people are doing at the club?

Wellington Community Trust's Young Community Leaders Awards 2013 are on soon!

These awards are to recognise the outstanding work that young people are doing in leadership roles within not-for-profit and voluntary organisations within the Greater Wellington region.

If you know someone you think deserves this recognition, nominate them today! For more information and nomination forms see attached - Nominations close March 31st 2013

You can also contact the Wellington Community Trusts Program Coordinator; Claire Rosanowski: 04 4997966 or 027 345 7373

The Road to Nationals…

I am very pleased to announce the overall club points for the Capial Coast Championships, and the Whitehorse Trophy results…

Congratulations everyone! A great effort by all clubs and teams. You should be proud of what you have achieved!

Now for the sought after Whitehorse Trophy. This is awarded to the Top Senior Competition Club at the Capital Coast Awards function a little later this year.

Congratulations to… Lyall Bay SLSC!

It should also be noted that Worser Bay tied for third position with Titahi Bay! A great effort!

Could this be due to their new club coach, a Titahi Bay club member? Teehee

Again, well done to all clubs and a big thank you to all the officials, supporters and helpers!

Interested in getting involved in Event Safety work?

Surf Lifesaving is becoming increasingly involved in providing water safety provisions at events. In the last few months Capital Coast clubs have been involved in a range of events from the State Ocean Swim Series, the opening of the "Jump Platform" on the Wellington Waterfront, various local triathlons and even patrolling the harbour front over the Sevens weekend!

If you and/or your club are interested in getting involved please let me know. Next season I will circulate a list of events to clubs so you can see what is coming up and get involved early.

This type of service provision is a great fundraiser for the club, but also a great way at getting the Surflifesaving brand out into the public space.

The Final Word

Is a slightly a negative one. I spotted a number of people wearing State branded Patrol Uniforms as their costumes at the Wellington Sevens. This is completely unacceptable. No lifeguard (or friend of lifeguard) should be wearing their uniforms as costumes at any event outside of our normal operations (unless otherwise agreed e.g. Some sort of Surf Lifesaving function, such as awards dinner or fundraiser). This can be very harmful to our sponsors not to mention the reputation the uniform should hold.

If you spot anyone wearing a uniform in this manner please let me know ASAP.

Please feel free to circulate this to your club members, use it in your club newsletters or post on Facebook.

If you have a question about any of the content drop me an email or give me a call.

See you on the beach!
